iOS Tutorial Video Offers New Guide to Making iPhone and iPad Apps

Toronto based Infinite Skills is now offering a 12.5 hour tutorial video course designed to make becoming an iOS Developer easier than it ever has been before. Presented by author Tony Bove, Learning To Build Apps for iPhone and iPad takes viewers through the standard app development cycle using the iOS SDK and Xcode all the way to submission to the App Store. Presented by author Tony Bove, Learning To Build Apps For iPhone and iPad takes viewers through the standard app development cycle using the iOS SDK and Xcode all the way to submission to the App Store.

The course focuses on two central app development projects, so that the viewers can follow along and build the apps themselves, piece by piece. Throughout this hands-on process, author Tony Bove provides relevant technical information and key background details as they directly apply to the tasks being shown. Viewers learn about specific hardware features and limitations of both the iPhone and the iPad, with tips on how to make development decisions accordingly, and learn how to work with the iOS SDK, XCode and the App Store framework to build and release their application to a wide audience. Even basic programming concepts and techniques are included for viewers who have never created their own code.

The iOS App Development Tutorial Video series includes 105 separate lessons, with a total running length of 12.5 hours. In addition to covering the basic steps of creating an app for the iPhone and iPad, it also includes point-by-point tips for animating menus, incorporating iAd banners within an app, personalizing user controls through gestures, troubleshooting bugs and creating Universal apps that can be played across all iOS devices.

"While there are a standard set of options most users expect to find in an iPhone or iPad app, as a developer you'll also want to add your own personal touches," said Chris Johns, content specialist for Infinite Skills. The author of more than a dozen books, Tony Bove has years of experience as a consultant and speaker throughout the technology industry. iPhone 5 already in Testing?

A story on The Guardian’s Technology Blog today says that boxed iPhone 5s are already with the carriers, who are currently testing them. According to The Guardian’s carrier sources, the iPhone 5 hardware has been sent in locked and sealed boxes to the carriers to enable them to test the new phone’s compatibility with their specific network. Apparently very few people are even allowed to open these hallowed locked boxes, so tight is the security surrounding them. Even when this magic box is opened, the outer design of the new iPhone will not be revealed, as the hardware is inserted in a dummy body completely different to what the eventual body will look like. The Guardian goes on to say that apparently the reason that the iPhone 4 antenna problems were not picked up prior to launch was because the phone had not been tested sufficiently in its final form and its actual real casing by people outside of Apple. The Guardian report’s author, Charles Arthur, also says that contrary to recent reports about an October release date for the iPhone 5, he still believes that it will be released in September, based on the information he has received from his carrier sources, and also on the fact that Apple appears to be readying iOS 5 for a September launch.

Almost Half Of Android And BlackBerry Users Plan Switching To iPhone

Almost half of all Android and BlackBerry owners would trade their smartphone for an iPhone, according to a recent Piper Jaffray survey.
The survey was carried out in Minneapolis, on a small number of 216 mobile users, but the results appear to be similar to those indicated by a recent ChangeWave survey. Out of the 216 respondents, 29% were iPhone users, 28% BlackBerry users, 17% of them own an Android-based device. 11% were Windows Phone 7 and Symbian users, while the rest of them were feature phone owners.

When asked what phone they consider buying next, less than half of Android users said they would stick to an Android device(47%), out of which, 42% said they would trade their Android for an iPhone. BlackBerry users seem to be even more unsatisfied, as only 26% plan to buy another RIM device, while 67% would go for an iPhone and only 3% plan to switch to Android. In terms of carrier, both AT&T and T-Mobile customers seem disappointed of their mobile operator. AT&T is the most popular carrier in this small survey, with 35% customers, but when asked what would their next carrier be, 40% of them would choose Verizon.

Finally, the respondents’ answers indicated that the non-smartphone market is about to shrink even more. 15% of the polled users are feature phones owners, but 9% of them said the next purchased phone would be a smartphone. 64% of them are planning to buy an iPhone, with 36% waiting for the upcoming iPhone 5, even if there are no secific details regarding Apple’s next-gen iPhone. Apple is currently world’s largest smartphone vendor in both revenue and volume and this survey pinpoints that it could stick to that first spot for a while.

Apple Looking To Merge Mac OS X And iOS In 2012

Apple could be merging its iOS and Mac OS X operating systems into one platform by 2012. The platform would be used for both applications and cloud service and it might start with MacBookAir. Peter Misek with Jefferies & Co wrote Wednesday in a note to investors “Users want to be able to pick up any iPhone,iPad or Mac (or turn on their iTV) and have content move seamlessly between them and be optimized for the user and the device currently being used. We believe this will be difficult to implement if iOS and OS X are kept separate."

This thoery could be applied in 2012, and the MacBook Air might be powered by A6 quad-app processor, thus becoming the very first computer to comprise multiple devices and to have the power of a PC. Users’ digital data could be stored in the cloud, which could be the center of Apple’s strategy, since the profile, content and apps would be cutomized according to the device users log on to. The purported merging could be useful not only to users, but also to developers, who will adress only one unified platform, instead of developing apps and contents for multiple devices and different operating systems.

The recently launched iCloud Beta shows this merger happening with platform syncing. However, the traditional Macbook Pro and Mac desktop could stick to the Mac OS X software and the Intel processor and probably by 2016 the merging would be complete for all Apple’s devices. "When 64-bit ARM is available in 2016, we believe Apple will have a single OS and hardware architecture," said Misek.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Gets One-Click Root

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer just received an improved one-click Root, from some brilliant folks in the modding community. It's a little different than your standard one-click root, in that it uses Linux only, instead of Windows. Luckily, the developer of this "Mod" didn't want to leave non-Linux users out in the cold, so he created a Linux-based self installing CD-ROM ISO, that makes the process even easier! Here's a quote from the AndroidPolice article with another description,

Don't fret, though, Windows users, the dev behind this mod, rebound821, also developed an ingenious and simple way for you to use this tool with no previous Linux knowledge: a live CD. That's right, simply download and burn the ISO, boot into the disk, and when the desktop loads, hit "Universal Root for ASUS TF101." Bam. Root. Done.

Additionally, if you are a Linux user, it's even easier. To get more info and some download links hit the XDA source link below. One more thing to note... this root doesn't install ClockworkMod recovery, so you will need to get that separately.

'KORE' could be the next Android Device for Motorola; Maybe Next-Gen Tablet

Recently, Motorola registered a series of web domains. They were MotorolaKore.com, KoreMotorola.com, Moto-Kore.com, MotoKore.com, and Motorola-Kore.com. Industry speculation has caught fire, and most folks in the industry suggest that the "KORE" will be Moto's next generation Android Tablet.

Motorola has been planning to bring a newer and smaller 4G LTE tablet to market soon, and this is what leads people to suspect that the KORE might be a tablet. If this speculation turns out to be true, more than likely it will be some Ice Cream Sandwich based tablet, that will come out later this year or early next year.

Of course, all the speculation could be wrong, and this device could end up being something else entirely, even a phone or some other device. We will keep you informed as we find out more.

Do You Live In An Android State or iPhone State?

The iPhone is well-represented in the Northeast and Midwest, according to statistics released by Jumptap, a mobile ad network. The iPhone is also strong in Montana and Louisiana.

Android is very strong in the West, plus the rust belt of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. BlackBerry remains strong around Washington, DC, with RIM being the provider of choice for government bureaucrats -- at least for now. Corporate-centric New York is also a stronghold for BlackBerry.

There doesn't seem to be any obvious correlation between iPhone or Android use and statistics like per capita income or population density. TechCrunch has the complete study.

The chart above isn't particularly informative -- it doesn't give precise market share breakdowns -- but it is an interesting look at which states are over representing one brand or the other.

Sprint Announces Samsung Conguer 4G Coming August 21 for $100 Bucks

Although we have been hearing quite a bit about the Samsung Conquer 4G for Sprint over the last few weeks, we didn't have full specs, pricing details, or a firm release date. Sprint and Samsung have now shared all of this info. Sprint will release the Samsung Conquer 4G on August 21st, and it will sell for $99 dollars, after a mail-in rebate of $50 dollars on a new 2-year contract. Here are the full specs:

• Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
• 3.5-inch HVGA 320×480 display
• 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor
• Full-sliding QWERTY keyboard
• 3.1-megapixel rear-facing camera
• 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera
• 4G WiMax support

This actually looks like a fairly attractive mid-range device. What is most enticing is that this is the first Sprint phone that has both a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a front-facing camera, with Gingerbread. What do you guys think?

TouchWiz UX for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Rolling Out Now

Samsung indicated earlier this week that their Touchwiz UX update would be rolling out today, and they did not disappoint. The new update with a ton of new features began rolling OTA this morning. Normally, UI overlays for Android tend to be "iffy"; however, first initial impressions throughout the industry have been mostly positive. You could wait for the OTA update, but if you are "antsy", just go to Settings > About Tablet > System Updates to manually install it. Enjoy

T-Mobile Loses 50,000 Customers in Quarter 2, Revenues Down Slightly

T-Mobile just released their quarterly earnings, and at first glance the numbers look bleak, but in reality are actually a slight improvement over last quarter. They dropped/lost 50,000 customers during this quarter; however, that is about half of the 99,000 they lost during the previous quarter. Additionally, their revenues were slightly down this quarter, from $5.2 billion in the previous quarter, to $5.1 billion. President and CEO Philipp Humm tried to downplay the bad news by pointing to the improvements they have made with expanded 4G coverage. Above is chart outlining some of the details.

ASUS May Sell Upwards of 2 Million Tablets Before the Year is Out

The hottest selling Android tablet this year has been none other than Asustek's Eee Pad Transformer, and a recent report from Taiwan Economic News indicates that Asus may soon raise it's estimated sales figures for the whole of this year to 2 Million units. These sales propelled Asus to be come the Number 2 tablet vendor in Taiwan last quarter. 

Keep in mind, that these sales estimates factor in all tablets that ASUS sells or may sell. It is unlikely they will sell that many of just the Transformer. These estimates include future projections for several projects, including their new Eee Pad Slider, and maybe even the Transformer 2 that is rumored to come out later this year with NVIDIA's "Kal-El" quad-core processor. Another product that ASUS just unveiled was the Padfone, a hybrid device combining a 10.1-inch tablet with a standalone 4.3-inch Android smartphone.

It will be interesting to see if ASUS can actually hit these numbers, especially if the rumored Amazon Android tablets come out in the later half of this year. Still, it appears that ASUS is getting into the Android Tablet market in a big way, so it is possible. Regardless, the increased competition may slow down ASUS' sales figures, but ultimately will be a boon for the entire tablet industry, and could bolster them in the long run as it increases the popularity of Android tablets in general.

Samsung Event News: TouchWiz UX for Galaxy Tab 10.1 Rolls Out Aug5; New Accessories

There are several interesting tidbits of news coming from the the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 NYC media event that we thought we would roll into one article for you. First, Samsung announced that Touchwiz UX, their newest version, will be rolling out with a public release on August 5th. They also shared dome of the details of the new UI:

• Samsung Kies 2.0 support for PC and Mac
• Live Panel = a magazine-like widget view for immediate access to weather, social updates, email, and news on the home pane
• Mini Mode Tray = providing one-touch access to commonly used apps
• Clipboard = advanced version of copy and paste
• Photo Editor
• Indicator Quick Panel = enables users to toggle on / off WiFi, notifications, sound, brightness and settings in lower right hand corner of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 display
• Amazon's Music Cloud Player
• The Kindle app and 'Words with Friends'
• Full support for Exchange ActiveSync version 14, on-device encryption and Compatibility with Cisco's VPN / Sybase MDM / WebEx
• Wireless printing to any "compatible" printer

The next bit of news from the event, is that Samsung will be offering a slew of new accessories for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. While most of these have been hinted at in previous news, pricing details were shared on them this time. Here's a breakdown of them:

• $50 Multimedia Dock, that props the device up in landscape mode, charges it and gives it an HDMI out
• $80 Ultra Productivity Tool that also charges the device and includes a full-sized keyboard with Android shortcut keys
• $150 Premium Protective case that basically transforms the tablet into a pseudo-notebook with a full-size Bluetooth keyboard and a hinge that lets you adjust the tab's viewing angle
• $40 HDTV adapter gives the tablet full 1080p HDMI output
• $60 Premium Book Cover which is basically a fancy case for the device and allows you to prop it up for typing or viewing movies
• $20 stylus with an aluminum body and a silicon tip
